This past week in my own teaching I felt a little disconnected which prompts my question to you, "What was the moment (or moments) when I felt most disconnected or disengaged as a teacher - the moment(s) I said to myself, I'm just going through the motions here?"

Things that are working

I learned so much this summer.  There are several main concepts that are working for me.  At the start of each class period, I have a "Question of the Day- Bell Ringer" posted for my students to answer with a 5 sentence paragraph.  The Question does not necessarily relate to the subject matter of the class that day, but it is a question that engages my students to write.  This activity assists me greatly in performing intial housekeeping for the class period.

Another concept that is working for me is to utilize the rubric of I explain it, you explain it before the students engage in an assignment or activity.  The students know what they are expected to do and are able to refresh or inform their classmates of the assignment/activity.  They are able to ask three and never have to ask me.

Hi Cali, having a bell ringer at the beginning of class is a great strategy. I still struggle in the area of having class from bell to bell. I may use the question of the day in one of my classes. The writing of a five sentence paragraph seems to be appropriate for students to complete during the time given. Using a rubric is also a great idea. I haven’t used one in my classroom yet, but I do plan to use one next week. I have a lot of professional learning days coming up and I am going to assign a project for my students to work on which will have a rubric. I will be sure to explain it first as well. I’m happy the ask three strategy is working well for you. You are off to an awesome year. The summer session of NTI was great.

I Like your bell ringer activty, i would suggest make fit to whatever lesson you working with that day to tie it into the lesson. Have your students repeat the instructions to you verbely. That way that have it visiually and audio. THis will also clear up any confusion.

Hi Cali,
Thank you for your post. I am glad you are able to implement some strategies from the summer that are making your classes perform well for you. See Tim's comment about the bell ringers. I agree with him that you should tie them to the lesson. That's going from good to great . . . Dr. J.
