As you leave your keys you meet your replacement. You are asked to give this new teacher just ONE piece of advice. What would that be, and why? Enjoy your world expedition!

Blog Post - Week 7
This past week in my own teaching I felt a little disconnected which prompts my question to you, "What was the moment (or moments) when I felt most disconnected or disengaged as a teacher - the moment(s) I said to myself, I'm just going through the motions here?"

Portfolio

Some of the topics of the portfolio seem more appropriate and easier for me than others. I am still having a difficult time coming up with something for this week. I have been trying to get my information together for this topic and am still not sure what direction I will go in. The end results of this portfolio will be very beneficial I am sure. It will be great to have all of this information together in case I ever need to show it to someone. It also helps to go back over old lessons and see how they will fit into this portfolio and in doing so, I have found some revisions I would like to make. Our school is having us do benchmark exams every 6 weeks and this is stressing me out to have so much to do for class and school. I am having a hard time feeling like my brain is "fresh". Thus the difficulty in coming up with the direction I need to go in. I don't want to sound so negative because I definately see the merit to the portfolio. A mental break would be wonderful right now! (note that was break, not break down :)).

It does seem to be a very challenging time with all that is going on at school, HOSA and NTI. The topic for this week on knowledge of human development and learning triggered me to think about our chapter on life stages related to human growth and development. I selected engaging set induction and will be using one from the beginning lesson plan on that unit. It is also helping me to go over old lessons and see what I can do differently. I can’t image having to do benchmark exams every six weeks along with all the other responsibilities. Maybe this extra day we have off tomorrow until 5 pm will be restful. We will be getting a break from class at the beginning of March which will help. If you want to do some brainstorming just email me and let me know a time that will work for you.

Hi Jayna,

I feel your frustration and I know exactly what you are going through. Every 3 weeks we have to turn in performance trackers, instructional reviews, and a host of things I can’t even think of. It is very challenging for new teachers but I think creating a portfolio will help showcase the work that we are doing. Sometimes it’s hard to see if you’re progressing as a teacher but this is a way to access yourself and for others as well.

Hi, Jayna - Paulette has a great idea and maybe brainstorming with her may help, and spring break will help as well.

Thanks, Paulette.
