Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

Something I have started using to get the students quiet is turning off the lights like Dr. Burns does to get our attention. It has worked really good. Now I do not have to raise my voice to get their attention.

I too thought it was a really effective technique that Dr. Burns taught us. I am glad you have implemented it into your classroom and it is working well for you. I actually forgot about that technique until you just brought it up! Thanks for the reminder!

I have not used this technique, but I am going to try it. I find that if I keep a few lights off the students pay more attention and they are more quiet.

This is my first day in class and I think "flipping" the lights on and off is a great way to quiet the class. I will for sure use this going forward. It is always great learning from others!

Great job Kenny. I hate yelling over students and I don't like to hear teachers doing it either. This is so much more professional and a great signal that something is about to happen. Wade has a great idea to use it for clean-up time.
