Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question
1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

Describe something you used in your program in the first weeks of school that you learned in the summer NTI program. How did it work? Did it get you off to a stronger start than last year?

I have been able to implement those strategies as well in my classroom. My students were so surprised with the way I was addressing their behavior. They even started asking me what was wrong with me. Last year, I found myself yelling and it was not effective.
I will be eager to learn some of these techniques for myself! This information will be valuable to me as I have also run into several issues similar to this!
I've noticed students reaction to my use of new methods in much the same way. For the most part, it seems kids are drawn to a structured, safe, learning environment. And I feel like I have been able to provide that even better now with the training we received in NTI and the kids are loving it.
Sure there are still a few knuckleheads, but the kids are beginning to police other student's behavior because they want to learn.
I know the videos have some cheesy acting, but the strategies are well researched and will work if you use them consistently. I appreciate that you are trying them! It is kind of funny that the students are wondering what happened to you. I have heard this before from teachers. It's amazing how they notice everything. I do think they appreciate calm.
