What did you learn this week either formally or informally that will help you
grow as a teacher? You may have learned this from another teacher, through an
experience, from a student, in class, etc.
As a teacher we are constantly learning new things to challenge our students. Perhaps as we are teaching our lessons we discover something we may not have ever learned in our school days, or in college. As I do research to help me plan my lessons, I think about my students and what they can get from the information I am planning to disseminate in class. After all, we are educators that must find various ways to instruct all students.
Just last week I learned from a colleague that Youtube is allowed for instructional purposes. Many of my students often tell me about Youtube and how fascinating it is when it comes to Culinary Arts. After viewing the Youtube site, I was convienced it was definetly a great resource tool for lesson planning and current videos.
My advice to you is make sure your school system approves it first. Youtube can only be used for instructional purposes Only.
This site is a class blog space for new Career and Technical Specializations and Heathcare Science teachers enrolled in the New Teacher Institute (NTI) at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.

I am so glad you mentioned this resource! I too just learned from a colleague this past week about YouTube. She gave me a couple of infection control titles to look up and when the students saw me type in YouTube on the smart board they cheered! Who knew? I had everyone’s attention and got the reactions I was looking for from the two clips that I showed. I plan on using this format again in other units. Thankfully the students are blocked at school from this site so I have the control. (I have the “power”!) Yes, who knew?
Hey Chef Tony! I use YouTube regularly. I have found with my limited budget, it is cheaper for me to allow YouTube to do some of my demos. The angle is better and I can pull several ways to show them anything. Just be sure to ALWAYS view the video in its entirety before playing it in class. Sometimes inappropriate language sneaks in but there are many that are appropriate teaching videos we can use.
I have a student who gave birth last week and she will be on hospital home bound for six weeks. A teacher is going to her house to teach her but you and I both know that she will not be able to do my demos for her. So, I put together a list of things she would complete throughout the week to include her reading, worksheets and YouTube video links. She will do her own labs taking a picture of her mise en place and finished product and email it to me. Nice way to get in that technology component from home right. I feel that this way, she will only miss our smiling faces but not our lessons or her hands on. When she returns she will be right on schedule.

YouTube is a great thing to have. I can usually find something of any lesson that I am teaching. I always type funny behind whatever I am searching for. I found one on Infection Control.
