Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

week 4

I had a day when none of my classes wanted to do anything that day. Of course it was a day when i was fell sick and was tired as well. The more i tried to get my kids to work on projects they just seemed to just want to talk and play in class. It wasn't all my students just the students that don't care about school all the time. I asked around to other teachers if they had the same problem and some said yes. It was just about the worst day of my teaching career. After talking around to my co-workers and seeing that they were having some of the same problems relaxed me a lot. I really thought that i had my classes on track and that the students understood what was expected from me. So for the next day or two i just did the best i could and it got better and things were back to normal ( well the best it could be).

I have had those days before. My wife claims that it is the full moon's fault. But, I would have to say it is lack of belt to the rear end. But seriously, I think these students pick up on our feelings and how we are on certain days. Sometimes I think they just want to try us to see how far they can literally push our buttons. And then of course, there are students that think nothing else EVER matters but them. I once heard that kids are extremely self-absorbed. I was making a statement to one of my female students that has a habit of talking all the time that she was kind of like my daughter, brilliant, but somehow ended up talking in her classes when she should have been listening. She laughed and said, "Oh, Mr. Maynard, I don't talk in my other classes. Just yours." My response was, "Well, thank you." I know exactly where you have been Courtney.

Hi Courtney,

I understand that feeling you expressed so well in your blog. The students in my classes communicate so well regarding the class activities that I am forced to change activities to offer a challenge to those students coming later in the day. They often respond, "This isn't what you did during 1st period". I am also experiencing significant disappointment regarding the success of the students. I have spent a significant amount of time on note taking skills, organization and time management. I gave an OPEN NOTEBOOK test last week and the student’s grades were parallel to a blinded test. I have to admit frustration with this. But, I will keep on keeping on and one day they will have an epiphany--I hope!
