Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.

Master Teacher...

Well, never really thought of myself being or becoming a master teacher any time soon. I figured that title was only for teachers that had been teaching for over 20 years. Well, considering I got New Teacher of the Year last year, I would say I'm on my way. This school year am noticing more students raving about my class. I am now noticing more and more teachers at the school telling me about my automotive students talking about how much they love my class. My repeating (2nd and 3rd year) students are listening to me more and are actively engaged during class. I am also finding myself lately to be a little less stressed out. Last year I was a stressful mess, so, I suppose I'm learning to not take things personally finally. This is my third year teaching automotive. I taught music for a few years at a private school. Public schools are totally different. I feel that each year I am teaching, I am growing and learning how to read people better. When I was at the private school, I wasn't burdened with paperwork and I actually had time to work with students one-on-one and learned how to speak to students to get the response that I wanted. I guess years of working in an automotive shop with a bunch of guys has changed that perspective in me. I feel like I am getting some of it back though.

I enjoyed reading your post. I also discovered that life is a little less stressful when you can see a difference being made. I think it says a lot when other teachers are expressing how students are enjoying the class that you are teaching. Sometimes it is good to hear these types of stories because many new teachers are not recognized for their work.

Keep up the good work and look for more accolades to come your way.

Dallas,J said...: I thought the same thing. As an automotive teacher I never thought of even becoming a master teacher. I always considered myself just good getting my certification much less being master teacher. I have gotten my masters in ASE but I don't think that counts.; March 4, 2009 at 7:43:00 PM EST
