Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

Teaching Surprise

I was caught off guard this week by my advance classes. It was a pleasant surprise. A group of boys, that I have had in class before, would not pay attention and acted as though they didn't want to be in class, all of a sudden, began making suggestions for class projects relating to sports. Their interests towards the class improved dramatically. I showed them attention and acceptance of their ideas and they engaged like never before. Their behavior, motivation and willingness to learn was amazing.

That's great. Having one or two students that appear disinterested is very distracting. Having a group of students act this way can be very disturbing. Congratulations on gaining their attention!

Hi, Leonard - you have seen, in a noticeable way, one of the great motivators of learning, and that is how eager we all are to learn when we are interested in the material. Now if these students have success in the sports-related projects they are engaged in, they should continue to be eager learners moving forward. Other disinterested students should respond in the same manner if their interests are tapped as well. Thanks for sharing.
