This past week in my own teaching I felt a little disconnected which prompts my question to you, "What was the moment (or moments) when I felt most disconnected or disengaged as a teacher - the moment(s) I said to myself, I'm just going through the motions here?"

Josh - Pickin' up what I'm layin' down.

Well, here's my post for the week:

Exhausted. Is anyone else feeling the same way? We have been trudging through a student film festival for the past several weeks and it is literally draining my life from me. To top that, yesterday was Election Day and it would have been nice for the Cobb County School District to d let us have the day off. But, alas, the powers that be didn't do that... they stick us in meetings all day.

On a positive note, we started a club for Broadcast Video students at my school. Not that I was eager to take on another responsibility, but it is nice to see the kids that are interested in this stuff. I kept telling them that we "may or may not have donuts". They asked me what I meant by that and I said, "Well, if you bring donuts, we'll have donuts." Guess what? They brought donuts. Oh, happy day!

Hope everyone is having a great week.

I'm right with you when it comes to exhausted!!! This is HOSA week for me (like you, a new endevor) and I'm pooped. I also like the idea of having an organization of my own. I did SkillsUSA last year with the rest of the school and felt like my students got lost is the sludge. Now we are in charge. Here's my new moto for my students. HOSA members are your future lifesavers (and we include the lifesaver candy...yum). Anyway, I may try the donut idea sometime soon. Going to bed now, tomorrow starts another BUSY day!!!

Rough week too. My list of things to do is growing longer by the day. I am behind with my GSU work and totally missed some work. I am now playing catch-up. We had to work Tuesday, but the students were out for election day. When they came back they were wild, really wild! We had more trouble than we ever had. The white and black divide was very apparent yesterday. I had never spoke to any student about politics before yesterday, but I had to stop a lot of untruths for both views. Today was quite different. Normal and very quiet. We also like to have meetings galore. The worst thing was a new report I had to create called content maps. Instead of odjectives it is EQ. We had to turn in the first term lesson plans in the new format to the boss in just four days. What is positive? I am looking.

Busy, busy! I am on extended day and really am struggling with juggling everything. Note to self, don't do college and sacrifice your planning period... EVER! My positive note, is that my students realize this and have turned into productive, self managing, self starting ANGELS!!! I can't believe it. Kids have feelings and respect for teachers when they WANT to. Team work, what a wonderful feeling!

I feel your exhaustion. I feel on the edge a lot, and sometimes on the verge of tears. Trying to keep my kids on task is proving to be such a challenge.

I also had meetings on election day. But once I got in line that morning, I wasn't about to leave... even though it made me an hour late for my meetings. Once I got there, it turned out to be a joke. I drove 40 miles there and 40 back... for a GREAT BIG joke.

I started a video club too. But thank Heavens the President is a very determined young lady. She has taken complete control and runs it on her own. I'm just there as supervision. And someone brings food every week. Sometimes home-baked!

Hi, Josh - apparently a number of your NTI colleagues did pick up what you were laying down as evidenced by the great comments to your post.

Glad to see you finally got your donuts . . . thankful for small favors.

I continue to be saddened to hear of all the meetings and paperwork issues you'all are running into, as I struggled with all that as well. I'm not sure it ever gets better but you will learn how to deal with it and stay focused on your students. Keep sharing, professionally, with your admin that that is why you are teaching, and eventually they will listen to you and maybe realize how time-challenged you are. Try to make your priorities theirs as well.
