Veteran's Day

We had a very nice assembly last Friday in honor of Veteran's Day. We honored past graduates, current employees as well as those in the community that have served in the millitary. Among those honored was a Marietta High graduate Captain Hayes Clayton. Captain Clayton was killed in the line of duty in Iraq last December. He left behind a wife and baby son. He also left behind his parents and two brothers. The reason that this story is so special to me is that I actually knew Hayes Clayton. We grew up on the same street and spent a lot of time together as kids. I had not seen him since high school when I found out about his death and I got to see his family at the assembly and offer my condolences. I just want to say a thank you to all who serve and have served because I really appreciate all that you do.

Tommy,
This is a very moving post. I was so "warmed" to hear of the veterans being honored. My Dad was a world war II Marine, and my husband served in Vietnam in the Army. You students will learn from you the importance of all this sacrifice.

How nice that your school had an assembly to honor the veterans. When I was a school nurse at an elementary school we did that. It was a huge success and very touching. I wish our high school had done an assembly.

I'm glad you got to communicate with that young man's family. I'm sure that meant a lot to them.

My grandfather was in WWI. My father was in WWII. My son has been in the Marines since 1998. Right now he is stationed at Ft Lewis, WA. I am very proud of him. But I worry every day too....

Thank you for your blog. It made me feel good to read it.

Thank you for sharing such a moving moment. My father served in WWII. We need to always remember that our freedom is not free. It comes at the cost of many brave men and women who are willing to fight for it. Hopefully our school will hold an assembly in the future.

Thanks for sharing we us. I too served during the Vietnam era. My nephew is serving currently in Special Forces. He has been to Iraq and Afganistan at least 6 times on special missions.

We here in the United States are lucky to have these brave young men and women fighting to preserve our freedoms!!!!!!!!!
