As you leave your keys you meet your replacement. You are asked to give this new teacher just ONE piece of advice. What would that be, and why? Enjoy your world expedition!

Blog Post - Week 7
This past week in my own teaching I felt a little disconnected which prompts my question to you, "What was the moment (or moments) when I felt most disconnected or disengaged as a teacher - the moment(s) I said to myself, I'm just going through the motions here?"

SkillsUSA Students Wanted

It's about twelve school days left in this semester and I'm not pleased with the progress my program has made. I worked very hard to promote SkillsUSA and the rewarding benefits students can gain from being a member. I showed the SkillsUSA DVD, I showed a letter of SkillsUSA winners from the National Competitions, and told them about all the self improvement workshops they would have the opportunity to attend. I had only one student to pay. I thought several other students were going to join but they never came up with the initial fee money. I then submitted a request to sell snacks and have not gotten it back yet. I was going to use some of this money to reduce the cost of the initial fee. Now it looks like it's going to be next year before I can possibly get more students to join. I was so glad that this courageous student stood tall and joined, I put on a pizza lunchon to get things off to a good start. My student enjoyed it and looks forward to SkillsUSA acitivities in the future. If anyone has a successful SkillsUSA chapter, please share the wealth! I need all the pointers I can get. Thanks in advance.

Good luck with Skills. Selling the idea of Skills was a tough go for me, at first. One thing that helped was to tempt them with the idea of "mini-competitions" within each class. You could possibly have an outside person come to do the judging, just like the real thing!

Yep, skills is tough to get members. Really and truly, the only thing it has going for it is the competitions and its hard to get any members other than competitors.

Glenn,
You are not by yourself, I have tried giving a pizza party with my own money. Showed the video, went to Jeykll Island all alone. I started doing stuff in the hallway causing students to be curious. I would allow the students to put on my drunk goggles and race up and down the halls, When student would walk by somebody would handcuff them. This is how I got student involved. I now have 30 students in Skills, not to say they are going to competed
