Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

DIP

I've explained to all of my students the policy about using dip in school. I caught a student using dip Monday, told him to go spit it out. He replied, "My bad", and went to spit it out. I informed the Assistant Principle about it and he wanted to see the kid in his office. So the next day I sent him into see the principle where the student denied dipping in my class although he has been put in ISS twice this year from other classes. The A.P. told me that he would go ahead and put him in ISS or we could talk to the student together. I told him we would wait and talk to him together. This is a first for me. What's the best way to respond to a student that says he didn't do something that you know he did?

Hey Steve,
Next time make him spit it in a cup then take him and the cup to the AP yourself! Or better yet have the AP come in before he spits it out!

WOW!, Talk about social and cultural differences....I am surprise to hear that "DIP" is a concern in the school. Next time make sure you call the Administrator to catch them in the act!!

To me the bigger issue is lying. I've told students who were caught in a lie that lying causes others to lose respect for them and that they deserve to be respected. In that way they know they are important to you.

I would not argue the issue with him. You know he had it. If he doesn't respect the fact that you wanted to talk with him instead of going staight to ISS, don't give him and option next time!

i agree with johnny...i can handle the dip..however lying is a totally differnet issue..i hate liar
