Rules For Posting To This Blog and Weekly Blog Question

1. Only use your first name (no last names, addresses, IM screen names, etc.)
2. Show respect and consideration of others when posting and commenting. This includes individuals, students, organizations, political parties, colleagues, etc.
3. Check all posts for spelling and grammar errors before posting.
4. Protect the privacy of others. Gain permission from other people before you write about them. Avoid sharing someone else's last name. Use job titles or pseudonyms when writing about experiences with your co-workers or students.
5. Watch your language. Use politically correct and non-offensive language.
6. Make sure you write about things that are factual.
7. Keep your postings education-oriented. Avoid discussing plans for the weekend, etc.

It seems like each week gets easier and easier. With all the things I learned at NTI over the summer it is much easier to keep the students engaged. I also feel I am doing a better job than I did last year. The overall average of my first test was much better than last years.

What specifically are you doing differently this year from last year to keep your students more engaged? What specific "data" or evidence indicates that you're doing a better job than last year? Please tell us more.

more group activities and not just lecturing about the chapter. using the rubrick gives them something to strive for instead of me just telling them what they need to accomplish..the scores of my first test were much better than the first test of last year

Very interesting. I'm a big advocate of group activities, but you're right that you have to find ways of structuring those activities and you have to provide clear guidelines to ensure group productivity [when they work in groups]. I find it very intriguing that the scores on the first test were better than last year's scores. That "data" would tend to lend support to the theory that students learn better when they are engaged in more learner centered activities. Keep us posted on your progress.

I feel the same way. NTI has made a world of difference. I wish I could have been in NTI last year. I am also trying to do less lecturing and more group activities. I think it keeps them engaged. Have a wonderful rest of the week! Tracy

I feel the same way that you feel using the rubrics in the classroom makes things a whole lot eaiser. My first safety test overall scores were much better than last years. Riley

I began labs last week. I used a rubric to show my students exactly what they would need to know to be successful at the skill of handcuffing. The students seemed to respond well to the rubric.
