For those that can relate...I had to put our dog to sleep this morning(3/21/08)
I had an AKITA she was nearly 11 years old. She was diagnosed with cancer of the spleen last spring. The doctor only gave her a few months to live....well, a year later the cancer ran its course...and she started to show signs and symptoms. We prepared our kids a year ago, but reality hit them this morning...my daughter (8 years old) was devastated!..she cried all last night and woke up this morning crying...my son(12 years old) was a little more understanding until he had to physically lift her(my dog) into the truck...he immediately broke down..My wife has been crying for two days....sad, sad sad, time.
I've never had a pet this long and although I made my peace with the decisions a year ago I was still hurt to see my family take it soo hard.
Her name was GABANA, and she was an excellent pet!...the house will not feel the same without her!
This experience is a first for me......all my dogs ran away when I was a kid!

JaJuan,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I can definitely relate. I have two dogs of my own that I adore, and my Boxer showing signs of aging. I can't imagine life without either of my "boys". I love animals in general, but I do think dogs are really special. They relate to humans, and we relate to them with strong emotional bonds. My thoughts are with you, your family, and Gabana.
Dear Jajuan, You and your family members have my deepest sympathy. There is no pain that I know that equates to losing a beloved family member. My sweet Caspar now has a new friend in Heaven. I hope they are running and jumping together - healed from the ailments that plagued them on earth. Dr. J.
As much as I tease my wife about her two dogs - ex - I "hate" those dogs - I know that I will be completely devastated when the older one who is approaching 15 years old will either pass away from old age or will have to put to sleep because of some disease or cancer.
The younger one who just turned a year old - well I will pay someone to come get him!!!!!!! Just kidding - he of course is the "replacement" dog - just obtained before replacement was needed.
I feel for you!!!!!
Cowboy,
As much as I like giving you the "rib" sometimes, I do hate to hear stories like this. As my wife and I do not have children, our pets are our "babies". Both of my "pups" are not "pups" anymore. One has bad hips; the other is diabetic ( two shots per day). As "corny" as this may sound, I do feel your pain.

I can't speak from personal experience of loosing a pet, because, I have never owned a dog as an adult. What I can relate to as s achild is all of our dogs running away, so that was the size of it.
However, it ia heart wrenching to hear you speak about how devastated you family is over the lost of your dog. No words to say, but be strong for your family. The question now is do you get what Steve calls a replacement dog, or do you spare them fron having to endure such pain again?
