stop taking those flu shots

Have you ever stopped and considered why some cultures use so many spices in their meals or have a bottle of honey and some lime in the house, or pices such as pimento, onion, curry, garlic, thyme, scallion and ginger. Doctors have proven that these spices have properties to control the cold and flu. A closer look of these spices will reveal that they also have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.These spices help to fortify our immune system and provide us with the extra protection we need to fight various forms of parasites, especially the cold and flu.

It is proven that honey is packed with powerful antioxidants and natural antibiotics the darker the honey the better it is. Lime on the other hand is high in vitamin C, which help to flush the system.

Remember to drink half your body weight in fluid ounces of water per day ( if your weight is 200lbs you should drink 100 fl oz of water per day). Wash your hands regularly and use a lot of fresh spices.

Getting away.

Its nice to get away for a few days. On Wednesday I went away to Pittsburg on an all expense paid trip, where I met with 16 other teachers in my field. I came back tonight instead of tomorrow because I did not want to be another JuJuan (My group knows what I am talking about). Teachers were from 5 different states and its amazing that all of us shear some of the same problems with our students. We went to visit an school that has 1400 students that only does automotive. What the school does is to break up some of the areas into sub-areas so as to have the students specialize in the area of their choice. Of all these students there were about 20 Females. The school also provides housing for these students.

Traffic congestion.

Recently I was reminded that even the wealthy First World countries, the supply of human, physical and financial is great, while the demands for these resources are unlimited. Such is the issue of traffic congestion in many areas in Georgia, where traffic demand is far greater than the capacity of existing roadways. One factor that contributed to this congestion is the time structure of the demand for using the roadways.

We should remember that the usage of our roads has increased since 1996 with an increase of car ownership and the lack of a good public transportation system. These congestions cause an increase in fuel costs, stressed and frustrated motorists encourage road -rage, and consequently reduce health.

What we should call for is a bus lane instead of a HOV lane. more Park and Ride. Then and only then, will Georgia be on the road to overcome these congestions.

At-risk students

Here are twelve words that I learned at a multicultural seminar this past week that will be helpful to our students when taking test.
1. Trace 2. Analyze 3. Infer 4. Evaluate 5. Formulate 6. Describe 7. Support 8. Explain
9. Summarize 10. Compare 11. Contrast. 12. Predict. The ones commonly used are 6, 8, 10, 11.

Unemployed or unemployable

The significant number of young men that are unemployed because of the lack of needed skills in the work place is growing. Unless they ditch the falls pride that is getting them nowhere and assume their responsibilities for themselves and their family the better it will be.

Many of them do not stand a chance because they are either unskilled or illiterate. This as a glaring manifestation of the problems that has been raised and discussed in various forums across the U.S.A over the past five years or so.

Skill centers and schools like ours are available but are not being utilised sufficiently by our students, school counselors and politicians. What needs to be addressed is the lack of will and motivation by our young men and women to take advantage of these existing opportunities.
Even as these teenagers and young adults grow older they do not advance to higher education and the percentage who return to school to acquire what they should have obtain in high school is very low.

Whatever the cause or causes, the implications for the stability of our society are frighting. The large amount of unemployed and unempolyable young men and women make them easy recuits for gangs drugs and other crimes.

Fighting in school

This is my third year at this school and I have never seen so many fights. Last week the cops had to arrest five boys and two girls. Even when going with the cops they were still them a bit of their lips.These are the same students that are always out of class and does not care what grade they get on a test. On the other hand these students are the ones that Shane was describing on Saturday in his conflict resolution. Sometimes these students leave home carrying a book bag of conflicts and as teachers we are there to help them resolve them before the fight starts.

Should children have breakfast

The word break-fast mean to break a fast you have fasted from food from after dinner until the next morning. So how should you break it? There is no right or wrong way. Some like to sit around the dining table with the table spread others stop at the corner store or at Q-T. while others will have some fruits. As parents we have to be creative especially in the mornings when we are rushing and time is limited. Since food is essential to stimulate the brain let your child have fruits if that is what he/she wants then you can pack a sandwich and put in the back pack.
If you are a parent any nutritious food can go for breakfast. Remember children are like birds they eat small amounts but they eat very often. Also snacks should be small nutritious meals and not empty calories.

should the jobless have children

Having parental responsibility means that you have the right to make imperative decisions about your child's life in the areas like medical treatment and education. But it also means that you have the responsibility to financially support that child at least until the end of high school. Financial responsibility of a parent is also indispensable for many other reasons, but it has been the only means by which a parent can maintain control over their children. when a parent is unemployed this not only reduce the standard of living and can be detrimental to the child's future. The issue of unemployment and pregnancy is of interest for several reasons, since it is a marker of socioeconomic status a potential marker of stress. An unemployed person usually require more health services than their employed counterparts. I have felt to forewarn that it makes no sense to have a child if both parents are unemployed.

Where are the parents?

My heart goes out for these children (our students). Ninth and tenth graders are coming to school pregnant. Eleventh and twelfth graders coming to school with ankle monitors or coming to school smoking. They think they can get away with it until the cops take them away in hand cuffs. I do know that the bills have to be paid, but it is also important to spend quality time with the children. We have seen these parents on the 6pm TV news saying "my child would never do this", but what do they know about their child? As a teacher you can do but so much only pray that they will take back their homes from the drug dealers and the TV, so we can have a better school.

follow-up to my last blog

I went to my counselor about the problem, she said I should called the child's mother. I called her, but did not get her, so I left her a voice message. She did not return a call, but instead came by school to see me. At the time of her visit, I was with Jessie doing my evaluation. She left me a written note wanting me to call her, so I did. She started to pour out her heart to me. 2 years ago she lost her husband via an auto accident, three years ago her son then 14 had sex with a girl and the case just went to trial. He was charged with rape and was found guilty. He was to be sentenced on Tuesday. I do not know what the out-come is, but she promised to call me to let me know what is the final outcome is.

Who is Who in your class

This week I realized that one of my students has not been in class since last Thursday, so I decided to call his mother on her cell phone on Wednesday. When I asked for her son, her reply was " he was in jail and he is in court as we speak". I gave her my cell number and asked her to call me, to date she has not called me. Do you think I should call her?

Frustration or Stress

You can pay for it and keep it or stamped it return to sender never to return. I have ordered two fans and other equipments for my lab and to date I have not receive them. I have done all the ground work by getting prices and where to purchase these items. I had was to warn my practicum coordinator about the heat in my lab before she comes. Then today I was told that there is no money in my account to purchase small items for my class. Is this frustration or Stress? for me it is just another day in Dekalb. Don't let things like these get you down hold your head up and keep moving forward.

Someone is watching you.

Last school year a teacher left her office door opened, when she returned money and credit card was missing. No one knew who did it. ( Have you ever heard Warner Wolf doing the sports news and he would say "Leeets go to the video tapes ".) so that was what we did. When we viewed the tape we got the answer. Two students were taken out of class by the cops. One spent the night in jail because his mother did not knew where he was. Both of them are now in alternative school.
