Teaching Surprise
I was caught off guard this week by my advance classes. It was a pleasant surprise. A group of boys, that I have had in class before, would not pay attention and acted as though they didn't want to be in class, all of a sudden, began making suggestions for class projects relating to sports. Their interests towards the class improved dramatically. I showed them attention and acceptance of their ideas and they engaged like never before. Their behavior, motivation and willingness to learn was amazing.
That's great. Having one or two students that appear disinterested is very distracting. Having a group of students act this way can be very disturbing. Congratulations on gaining their attention!
ReplyDeleteHi, Leonard - you have seen, in a noticeable way, one of the great motivators of learning, and that is how eager we all are to learn when we are interested in the material. Now if these students have success in the sports-related projects they are engaged in, they should continue to be eager learners moving forward. Other disinterested students should respond in the same manner if their interests are tapped as well. Thanks for sharing.
