Sadly, I was not able to attend the Summer NTI session. I have however, had many struggles this semester. My biggest struggle is classroom management. I have trouble with a lot of talking and cell phone usage in my classroom. I am a bit of a pushover! I need to learn how to really enforce the rules I have placed in my class. I hope with time I will be able to gain better control of my classroom.
Healthcare Science,
ReplyDeleteBeing a pushover isn't always a bad thing. But when it comes to your rules and classroom expectations, you need to be firm. Perhaps work on a classroom contract that all your students have to sign at the beginning of the school year and the contract would be them agreeing to follow your rules as you stated in your syllabus. Once you do this, then you can remind them that they are violating their contract and writing them up or calling their parents is the next step.
I know you can't take their cellphones from them, but maybe you can think of a reward you can give your students if you don't have a problem with them and their cellphones for a week or maybe 2 weeks...Hope this helps!

You can do it! I would continue to go over the classroom procedures, every day even if they get tired of it.Use some type of signal like a bell or turning the lights down,or raising your hand, some signal that the students can learn, so when you do it they know, ringing the bell means to get quit or turning down the lights means get quit. The more you practice it and stick to your procedures and add the consequences it gets better!!!Say what you mean, mean what you say.
ReplyDeleteHello Healthcare Science
ReplyDeleteTechnology is always welcomed in the classroom, but should only be used to enhance education and not distract or take away from learning. One way that I stopped excessive cellphone use is to post a technology sign and another way is to include an electronic expectation on my management poster.
If it is a technology day the sign says, "Technology In Use" and if it is not a technology day the sign says. "NO Technology." Also, think about adding an electronic rule to your management poster and try your hardest to stick to it.
Most importantly, find ways to incorporate use of technology in your classroom.
Happy Teaching, Happy Learning.

You have received some very sound comments from our group. I hope you are coming to Macon to the new teacher workshop. I will be covering this material in a session in the morning. I am also willing to see what you have and "coach" you until you can come to NTI this next summer. Dr. J.
ReplyDeleteWhat great advise from EVERYONE. Thank you so very much! I will implement the suggestions in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to get approval to go to the workshop! I am hoping that I will be allowed to come. I know it will be very beneficial.
