One of the most beneficial portions
of the summer NTI program was the lesson planning. As a result of NTI I began
the semester with several weeks of lesson plans ready to go. I begin each class with a set induction. The set induction is grouped with the
mandatory writing prompt for our school.
I use a variety of resources for this portion of class because it sets the
tone for the entire class period. My
students look forward to the writing prompt/set induction because I spend a
considerable amount of time searching for interesting videos, articles, audio,
etc. to get my students interested in the lesson for the day. My content area has been a hot topic in the media;
therefore, my class serves as a safe haven to discuss sensitive issues. The set induction/writing prompt allows
students to gain knowledge on relevant legal issues, voice their opinions, and
respectfully disagree with the opinions of others. The media is notorious for reporting issues
in a one sided manner. My students look
forward to learning the “real deal” when they start each class. I also
use the set induction throughout the class period to remind students of the
relevance of the topic that we are discussing.
I have also found the transfer in/out to be a useful tool. Students are able to organize the content
through meaningful recalls of information and they are always aware of what we
did and where we are going.
Chastity, I so agree with the set induction being so powerful. Adding this to the lesson plan has been extremely beneficial for students. I find that they look forward to it. It has been so positive that I introduced the concept to our advisory team and we now have these opening type activities at the beginning of our advisory.

I am encouraged by hearing how well using your set induction has worked for you. I must give my set induction more careful thought because I would like to see my students get excited about the upcoming lesson. I have also enjoyed having my lesson plans prepared. I'm just beginning to see how much responsibilty teachers' really have. Using technology in class is helping me to stay abreast technology as well.
ReplyDeleteChasity, I truly agree with you. Lesson plans has always been a throne in my side. I am truly appreciative of doing lesson plans this summer. It is still not my cup of tea, however I do understand the importance and relevance of lesson plans and I must agree it makes the day and week go by a lot smoothly.

I love the way you are teaching them to be informed consumers of information. Your strategy is perfect for your content area!
