Lee Iacocca...
Lee Iacocca stated, "In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and highest responsibility anyone could have." Do you agree or disagree, and why?
In general terms, everyone at some point regardless of their profession are teachers. You can teach by your lifestyle, what you believe in, or simply sharing words of encouragement. As a profession, I agree in the sense that holding the position as a teacher is indeed a honor. You witness the development of a student's mind that you actually took part of.
As for the statement, "...the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and highest responsibility anyone could have", I totally disagree. Every job, profession and craft out there is necessary which benefits everyone. If we didn't have garbage men to pick up our trash which in my eyes is of the upmost importance in sanitizing our neighborhood, could that be viewed as settling for less? I beg to differ.
I completely agree with you. This was my thought exactly. I think we all play an important role in society, no matter what our position. Since the majority of us worked in other positions, I wouldn't think we would agree with the statement. I know I don't. I feel my role as a Police Officer was very important to maintaining order and peace. All of which I believe contribute to a just society where productive citizens have the opportunity to live and work without worry. Therefore, I am with you in saying we all play important roles, one is not more important than another.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the statement for the most part, but like you, I see the valid point that all jobs are important in their own way. Much like in the theater world they say "there are no small parts, just small actors", I think this applies to careers. We all need all the professions... because if we didn't, they wouldn't exist in the first place.
