Running the show!!!

The thing that surprised me this week was when one of my students took charge in the shop. Now this student was very quiet in my class and is a female. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being quiet and a female, but this student really didn’t show any interest in automotive, so I thought. In class we have managers that have extra responsibilities. We just picked new managers and one of my managers is a female, I was very excited they she stepped up and decided to take on this role. Well hey, let me tell you guys something Jack, (sorry had to do it) this young lady is awesome!!! She is running the show in the shop and the fellas are actually going with the flow. I am very glad I started using the manager positions we learned this summer, because it works. The students get very excited about the positions and run with it. Thank you Dr. Burns. That’s what surprised me this week.

  1. How you run your class gave your female student the confidence she needed. It's one thing to be in a class with mainly male students, let alone having a male teacher. Yet you provided an atmosphere that spiked her interest and gave her the support she very well needed.

I can imagine how that made you feel. I have a student who usually keeps to herself and prefers to work alone. She's good at drawing and I partnered her up with a new student who shares the same talent. After this perfect match compared notes, today she expressed how she really likes the class and is looking forward to working with her new partner. That made my day.

  2. Thank you for being willing to implement something new that we talked about this summer. I really do try to give you the best practices, but it is YOU who makes the difference by the way you implement the practices. I am so happy that you took a chance -- and look what you learned?! Great post and great job.
