Area of Growth

One thing that I want to work on this semester is keeping my students engaged. They are all at such different levels, that I have to address many differently to make sure I meet them where they are.

  1. Hi, TSS - your post reveals a primary issue for every teacher, and will require a great deal of planning and multiple strategies to teach each student at their level. Grouping, of course, helps towards this goal and helps keep your planning time manageable.

  2. I have such a structured classroom already, I have to get away from the old fashioned "silence during the movie" mentality. I was in the Military and it taught me to respect those in authority and obey the rules at all times so my issues come in when even the quietest of my students whisper among one another.

With that being said, I have begun grouping my students into "Districts" as in the ones from The Hunger Games. They choose what District they want, first come first serve. Then I can set them to task and they work quietly with collaboration.

I know this isn't the end all be all answer, but it has helped me manage my students on a much different level as I now have more of them Engaged in the lesson and giving input as well.

    Good stuff.
