Please write about something that happened last week in your "teaching life" that made you happy and think to yourself, "this is what teaching is all about!"
On last week, I had the opportunity to assist 3 young people complete college applications to Johnson and Wales University who I have had the pleasure of teaching Culinary Arts. I assisted these young people with the process that are required to enter school for Fall 2013 semester. Teaching is indeed a passion that one must have to be successful.
This opportunity to assist this young people made me very proud of what I do each and everyday. Not only did I serve as their teacher, but as a Counselor as well. These young people looked up to me for guidance and directions as their prepare to compete in the world.

Kudos, Chef Tony! This is indeed a wonderful moment. I still remember and am grateful to my English teacher who took the time to show me how to use the internet and assisted me with completing college applications. I would've been so lost without her! I know that you will be remembered by those students in the same way for years to come!

ReplyDeleteI recently had a similar experience with a few of my students after teaching them about the many different healthcare careers there are out in the "real world". We also spent some time on how to dress for interviews and what to bring, what to say, etc. Since then I have had two students come to me outside of class time and ask me if what they had picked out to wear to their job interviews was appropriate. (I was so tickled by this!) A third student came to me after her recent job interview to tell me how well she had done and thank me and stated "the interviewer said she was so surprised by how well I presented for someone my age!" Isn't wonderful to see we make a difference! Keep up your wonderful ways- I learn from you too!
For the student, it is nice to be able to come to someone they trust and not be turned away because what they are asking "is not OUR job". They know you want the best for them. We all have had at least one somebody that was there for us in the same way. You didn't even think did you? You're a lot like me in thinking of these situations after the fact. But, looking back you wouldn't change a thing. The extra effort and the extra time leads to someone's brighter future. When you attend their graduation, be sure to send us pictures!
