Helping students find websites

Most of the time in HCS when we utilize the web for research,  it is medical related.  Trying to help students be discerning about what sites they use is not easy. They are quick to  "Google" or "bing" something and pick the first website on the search. In general I advise students to use non-profit, government sponsored sites to start. Typically there is no agenda on these sites.  It is important that There is no advertising on the site,or links to merchandise.  This can mean the website/article has bias and leads the reader to a product.

  1. Diane, your idea of using non-profit and those sorts of organizations is a great idea that I will "borrow" from you. I often have the same concern with students picking the first site that pops up, so I typically give them a few choices such as the CDC or OSHA's site. However, I always go behind them and seem to find a lnk to facebook or twitter. I am hoping a cure for some disease of some sort will end up on a social networking site so that we may all benefit..

  2. Hello Dianne! I was up doing my blog and was interested to see yours. As Akisa stated, I like the idea of concentrating on the non-profit sites as they do not have the hidden "agendas" of the those that are not non-profit. You are so correct in finding that the students also pick the first site they come to. This is a hard habit to break and I find I have to tell them over and over why they shouldn't. Like Akisa,I have used the CDC and OSHA sites but am constantly looking for more reliable sites for variation. (This age group gets to bored so quickly with a limited number of sites.) Thanks for your insite!
