One Piece of Advice

I would tell the new teacher to follow the required state standards. Then teach to get the students employed.
What I find in the standards are skills that are useful but will not totally prepare the students to get a job and are not the skills currently in demand.
Listen to what is happening in the industry and companies that are hiring and teach to that demand.
Also, hold the line on discipline.

  1. That is a great point Mike. I found that my first year I was teaching directly from the standards and not really from a possible employment standpoint. I now know how to relate it more to students acquiring a job and this helps to weed out some of the stuff that they necessarily will not use as much. I take my students to the local Nursing Home two days a week and it helps to stay in touch with the demands and requirements of the industry to better prepare your students.
