Perceived Roles

Personally I believe counselors should be responsible for the overall well being of each student within the school walls. They should provide the students with guidance in all areas of education; such as syllabus, personal guidance, family guidance, health guidance, and any other help students may need in their daily life as students in the school environment. Counselors should be available at all times and they should have a high level of professionalism from 9th grade through graduation and beyond. Followup after high school is also an important part of a counselors job. Counsels roles should change when the culture of a school changes - this will enable growth within the school, where you will see more students being more and more successful in terms of grade level increases and more successful completion of all state/local exams.

  1. Hello Chef BCY,

I disagree with the the statement
" overall well being of each students within the school walls" and no disrespect to your statement, because that's your opinion and I respect that but, after reading about amount of work on a guidance counselor I believe we really need to help them out as educators. Now we should be responsible for our own syllabus and the explanation of it. The nurse should be responsble for their health guidance. Can you imagine, and depending on the number of students in the school the daily life issues of a student and you being responsible for them all. We have around 1400 or more students in my school and three guidance counselors thats a lot of students and we have to help them, yes it's their job to guide in the areas of personal and family guidance, along with educational direction and assessments, but we must do our part to make sure that they are ready also, and I don't think it matters what we teach, I believe "each one teach one". Counselors can not be available at all times. With such a high volume of student they have to make appointments at my school so some times they can't get what they need from their counselor so we have to step in and help out and I think we should want to. The responsibility of a Guidance counselor is great and it takes a special person to want to take on such a responsbility. On Wednesday each homeroom teacher in my school had to help out guidance. We were instructed to hand out transcripts and personal informations forms and do an advisement with our homeroom students. I thought it was very informative. We had to help them see what there GPA was, how many credits they had, the number of credits they needed to go to the next grade, the number of credits the needed to become a senior and the number of credits they needed to graduate. Some teachers complained, but I didn't mind, and we were given step-by-step instruction on how to get it done, and I must say it was very interesting, because I also learned what they needed, because I did not know those things, but the instructions the gave me made me look like I did.I don't know BCY follow up after high school, the counselors just got three hundred new students, somebody else has to pick up the ball.
