When I first was exposed to this technology in the fall I panicked. I am occasionally slow on the uptake when it comes to new technology. Having used this for several months now I must say that I really like the format. The pros are NO TRAVEL. Finishing up at school and still having a moment to change clothes, grab a snack & hop on the session is very nice. Another pro is that I am forced to really learn a new technology and use it on a consistent basis. That is what hurts me , learning something & then never using it for a long time.
The cons are limited interaction with classmates and instructors, and of course the always present danger of technology meltdown. One aspect that took getting used to is giving an answer or opinion in a very concise format, as to give others the mic in a timely manner.
This is most likely the direction of education, especially at the higher education level. Being a nurse from the old school I still believe in human interaction for the basics, but this has made learning very enjoyable.
Yeah, the mic sharing is a problem for me. I'm use to stepping all over everyone trying to talk, and it's hard to play "wait your turn." I guess I don't play nice. I do love the no travel, but I agree with the interaction aspect. I really enjoy seeing people and interacting face to face. Part of my delivery is in my physical nature, and if I can't express myself I feel like you guys might not get what I say. I would be a horrible telemarketer. I'm way more reserved online than in a classroom setting. My biggest con for online is the pace. I understand the technology, so sometimes I get a little frustrated when we hit a slow patch. Although it is very fun to have class in my pajamas, not making that long drive to class makes me really happy.
ReplyDeleteHi emily,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post I realize you and I feel the same way. I paniced as well. The NTI instructors has develope a great format along with the lesson plan. I think it's easy to learn. It's nice complete a couple of things before class. Elluminate Live be the new thing for our students. It's a good thing we are already in training.
