Challenge in my class

The challenge in my class is that wean the students have mist so many day of school that they can't make up all the work in the class. The students come back to school and wont to make up the work but they have mist more than 3 week of school what kind of work can give them for all the labs that they have mist since they have been gone from class.

  1. Hello Daniel,

I have the same problem with some of my students. One way I have been dealing with this situation is to research the student’s reason for missing class. I have found several of the students to have valid excuses but the majority of them are skipping or not just attending school. I know my school's policy is to call the parents and to notify the school social worker but sometimes this is hampered by the wrong data we have on students
My suggestion would be to give the students wilth valid excuses either worksheets or a major project for makeup work.

  2. Hi there!

I agree with Bernardo. My first block class has some seniors that just oversleep in the morning and never make it in to my class. They have to make up their work after school. Let's face it, they aren't morning people so for them to come in the morning is a joke. They can't even make it to my first block class, much less before homeroom. A worksheet or a research project is just about the only way to modify the lab for them. I had a student who was gone 3 weeks in Europe traveling with his parents. He just was given a very in depth research project to accomodate the weight of the assignements he missed. Then was simply given a study guide for the tests he missed because there was just no way for him to get caught up on all the book work & academic content, etc. This just gave him what he really needed to know. Sometimes if the lab isn't too difficult to recreate, I'll stay after school to let a student make it up. But, they have to schedule the make up around my time, not their time. Otherwise, they will beat around the bush and never get it done.

  3. Hey Daniel,

We construction techers must be doing a number on these kids. I have the same problem and its ongoing. Those students that have comitted to staying and achieving in my class have been paired together to make up the assigned work. I have not let them off the hook easy by just giving them a project but they are allowed to work on the classwork together to help with understanding and with the work load. Try that and see how it works.
