Love Your Students??

I've been reading the blogs where everyone seems to love their students very much. I guess I am going to Teacher Hell because I cannot say that I love all of my students. Some days I am waiting for the bell to ring just as much, if not more than, my students. Some days, like today, they seem to get on my last nerve. And then I begin to think, What the heck am I doing this for? I seem to be working like a dog and the students could care less if they pass or fail.

And then I have a chat with myself and I find the positive things that happened in the day. Even if the only positive thing I can find is that the day finally ended, at least there was something positive to focus on. Overall, I do enjoy teaching. I love having a class and sharing and interacting with students. I guess I just get frustrated some days..... And some days I don't love them..... And I'm sure they don't love me either on those days....

  1. Hey Con,
When I started in this proffession my friend that helped me get this job, an experienced teacher, said "don't go in there with too many expectations because the kids can't live up to them". I get extremely frustrated just like you and every time I do I remember what he told me. Many of these kids haven't become "themselves" yet. They are influenced by so many outside sources and are so exposed to them on a daily basis that it's a wonder if they will ever find "themselves". I found that I need to do what I can to help them in that regard. It is getting easier everyday. Talking to them individually about thier own affairs on thier level really makes a difference.

  2. I agree with what Dwayne said. I have days where I don't love them either. Today is one of those days. My nerves are shot and I'm ready for Spring Break!

  3. You're not going to Teacher Hell. You're just human. I think Dwayne put things into perspective quite well.

  4. You can love some of the people some of the time, but you can't love all of the people all of the time. ( Unless you are a politician). Every day is full of a thousand different moments. As a teacher, I have really learned to appreciate the good ones.

I've found that sharing my thoughts with the students about what they can expect in the future really helps.I tell them of my own past experiences and how hard it is to make a good living in the real world. It gives them a reality check of sorts.I tell them that being cool ,being the class clown and all the drama of highschool is over the day that they graduate, and that these classes are designed to help them go into the work force or to continue on to a technical degree.I also explain to the students that the days of working on your car in the driveway is slowly becoming a thing in of the past, and that the well educated in this field will be able to make a very good living.

  7. Hi Connie,
There are some students I dread to see coming. Some of them I don't like because of their behavior. I have others who are a "JOY" to teach. Our strength will continue to come from us PRAYING for each other.
