Poker Chips
I really enjoyed the video on Saturday. It really hit home with me. It made me think about some of the things we sometimes say to our children, our own as well as the ones at school. After a hard day at school, I find myself coming home and not having enough energy to deal with my own son. I am usually on edge and sometimes the smallest thing gets to me. Jajuan and the video make me rethink punishment. I ALWAYS take away the things he like as punishment (sports, video games, no outdoors). Now, I have to really rethink punishment. I know we were looking at the video for school purposes, but it mostly made me think about my parenting skills.
I had the same reaction to that video when I first saw it. It made me want to go back and "fix" some of the mistakes I made with my own kids. It was humbling to watch that video and think about all the things I did wrong.

ReplyDeleteThe video was pulled on a lot of heart strings for me as well. I also wanted to rethink my method of punishment for my 16 yo son. I take his cellphone, video games and other things as weel as unishment, but I believe that they are distractions to his learning. So what do you do when he has 3 F's.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand the videoo also made me look at my sons ability to learn, because as in the video, I find myself telling him, that he is being lazy and he can do better, but I now have to ask myself, can he do better or is the on again off again success a part of his learning disability.
I agree with the comments from this video. It helped me to see where I can change things in terms of parenting as well. I have two teenage stepdaughters and after watching this video, it helped me realize that I rob them of chips and maybe that's why we don't get along as well as I'd like. I'm glad we were able to see this video!
ReplyDeleteWe have learned alot of things in NTI however this video hits home with me the most...it made me look at some things and try different approaches at "home" and school...this was a very very informative video series

ReplyDeleteWe seems to take things for granted. After the video I had to to put myself into check. I have always punished the whole class for something someone done and the class would not tell me who did it. I have some LD students who don't receive the chips they deserve. I am finding myself a little more patience with these students and I am beginning to see my faults. I believe I will learn from my mistakes.
I agree with all of you. This video made me look at myself. My kids are all grown and married with kids of their own. But I found myself wishing I could go back 25 years and redo some things.
