Living for the Weekend

Hey everyone,

The week has started out good, no major complaints. That's because I am out of here this weekend. I am taking a much needed mini vacation. Please don't be jealous! (lol)

My entire day has focused on the T.I. situation. I decided to print the affidavit and give the students an assignment based on that. Can you believe I had great feedback from the students? We were able to talk about a celebrity and still get a criminal justice related assignment completed without much complaint, I must add.

  1. I think it is a great idea to tie classroom activities in with things the students are interested in. I have also had some success along those lines. In my program measuring is a challenge for the students I let them make up rap tunes to learn measuring and they have been engaged doing it. I say if it works use it.

  2. Using a current event about a celebrity that your students identify with is a great way to capture their interest and to motivate them. Context is everything. The more you can map your curriculum onto content that is meaningful to your students, the more productivity you will gain from them. Isn't it interesting how students can grasp concepts if we find the right context to make the concepts meaningful to them? This is the ART of teaching.

  3. Kudos to you for taking TIME OUT for yourself. I believe it makes us better people. Tying the story of TI into your classroom learning is GREAT and a sure way to engage students in learning. In the past, I've asked students to write about a controversial newspaper story and site the pros vs. cons. We must make learning fun and be creative. Typically students like to read current events or new technology stories.
