Extended Day

How many of you are "Extended Day"? either you have a certain amount of students you teach or you teach 6 periods a day and you come in earlier and leave a little later each day. Some of us are half extended day meaning we do extra curricular things like sponsor clubs, organize functions, travel with students, etc... but we still have a planning period
I am currently half extended day and although a lot of my co-workers like the "extra pay" i am not money motivated and I rather have the extra time to prepare effectively for my classes. I think teachers new to the profession should consider how it may play into your effectiveness as a teacher...the same goes with taking on a sport or being an advisor/sponsor for a major club. It can be rather overwhelming when you are trying to get a foundation. Veteran teachers run like machines they already know how much they can "bite off"

  1. I totally agree with you Jajuan. I have taken on more than I can handle. This extended day is kicking my butt. I can never seem to catch up in addition to all of the other duties that I have. I can never plan as I like. I end up getting to school early and staying late or losing sleep trying to dream about how my class will run the next day. I am going to reconsider this next year.

  2. I am extended day and I am wound tight as a clockspring. I teach 4 90 minute blocks, im the lead advisor for Skills USA, and the founder/advisor for the Warrior Motorsports club. I live almost 1 hour from school so I leave home at 5:30 am, get to school at 6:30am, and leave school at 4:20 pm. Its really hard sometimes to find the time to do the things you need to do. On top of that, im not in it for the money, but I do have to make a little on the side doing work. I usually do this on the weekends so coming to GSU on saturdays has really put a cramp on things for me. Not to mention having the state and county board of education putting a ton of expectations on us this year that require a ton of changes and work to be done. All you can do it hope that next year gets easier.

  3. I am also on the extended day schedule. It is more work but it's worth it to me. If I can help more students, I'm willing to do it. If I do my planning on Saturday, the school week goes very smooth. If I don't, it's going to be a very stressful week. Being organized is the key for me. I hope to keep the extended day schedule.
