Show Off a Little
I would say that I am blessed in that you can split my class right down the middle and half of them show a genuine interest in broadcasting, while the other half like what they do in the class. Very rarely have I had a group of kids who absolutely hate my class. Now don’t get me wrong, I have had a few kids come through my program who would rather be somewhere else, but I have worked with them to find something they enjoy during the semester.
One of the reasons I luck out in this situation is that my high school is the Mass Communications Magnet Academy. That means the students in our county can apply to magnet programs (every high school has one) and find a school that fits their needs and interests. A lot of my students are magnet kids, while the others see the great things produced in our class and want to sign up.
As far as offering advice, I feel the only thing I can offer is to encourage your current students to brag about the fun things they get to do in CTAE classes, and spread the word for you. We also do a good job of taking on projects around the school so that other kids can get a better idea of what we are all about.

ReplyDeleteI was very encouraged by your post. I think as time goes by our students are going to begin to edge towards the technology trend. After all, they are digital natives by birth. Most of these kids have had some type of electronic device in their hands since birth or shortly thereafter.
I know that times change and I think as CTAE teachers we can only hope that the trend continues where more and more students find an interest in digital and alternative programs that we offer. Especially if those pathways are routes to magnet schools and post secondary plans to pursue such activities.
Next semester I will be teaching Introduction to Digital Technology and I know that both of my classes are already filled to the max. I have had several students from my current classes that are already trying to move into the new classes for next semester. While this is exciting and cool to me, I wish there were more teachers that taught the programs that we offer at my school.
With all of this being said, continue to be encouraged and hopefully this trend of more and more students taking interest in our various CTAE programs will keep increasing!
