A Do over...
I think as I continue to teach, I seem to find little things all the time that I would do over. One example from this past week that I would like to do over (or do differently next time) would be to first, keep the name and number of the substitute teachers that really keep my classes "in order" when I am out. Secondly, I will request them much further out for the day or days that I need one. I had to be out for a conference and had two different subs for the two days I was out. Upon my return I found that the first substitute was a "laissez-faire" type teacher and the second one was much strictor. The productivity of the two different days was very obvious as well as the comments on the behavior of my students. I now have to figure out what to do with the students that completed their assignment and what to do with those that did not. This is for all 6 of my classes! I did not know and now do know that there is a way in which we can ask for a particular substitute teacher and I will ask for one much sooner than I have in the past in order to ensure that I get that good sub. Another lesson learned and something I will certainly handle differently!
I feel your pain, I had a similiar situation this week. I have learned to expect my class leader to KNOW what to do in my absence. They will have a written action plan presented to me on Monday. I explained on Friday that my class rules apply whether I am present or not.
ReplyDeleteYes, Theresa, I know what you mean. A sub I used once taught my administrators a thing or 2. We already have a shortlist of 'approved' teachers that handle the classes well that we are required to choose from. Let's just say, after the day she subbed for me, the list got shorter. The kids were so rowdy. They had a bull horn in class. Mind you, I am right next to the office. Throughout the day she thought it was okay to let them wonder around campus. It matters. Having taught before, I still cannot figure out why she felt it was okay.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean regarding subs. At our school, are subs are choosen for us. I hate it when you prepare everything for the sub and they don't follow any of your instructions. My last sub, my students just ran right over her. She was an older woman, who subs for the school often. For some reason the only thing she was able to get them to do was talk to one another. According to my students, she just sat there and read a book. It's crazy how my classroom is very structured and well managed. It just goes to show you that students know when they can run over people. She let a report that all of my three classes gave her a hard time. All three? I was amazed how they acted.
