I was very intentional about how I introduced myself and my program to each of my classes. Instead of the "deer in headlights" introduction that I did last school year, this year I practiced being energetic, confident, and excited about the year to come. I really believe that it helped set a much more positive tone for my classes. Hopefully, this will cover me when I'm feeling overwhelmed and/or impatient.
That was a very good one to implement, and I'm glad it worked! I changed my first day strategy as well after reflecting on what we learned about first impressions.
ReplyDelete"Dear in headlights"--I know the feeling! That was my first day before NTI as well. It was much better this time.
Correction--"DEER." I guess I have Saturday-itis.
ReplyDeleteLoved your post - I have felt the same! The energy level is definitely mirrored back by the students.
ReplyDeleteI think I set a "strict, but nice" tone, and I am kind of happy I did. The students know that although I am a new teacher, they wont get a chance to run over me. I am glad this worked for you.
ReplyDeleteThe first impression is always the one they remember. Glad you were firm.
ReplyDeleteSherri,
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you projected an energetic attitude. That make the class more exciting to learn about. Reflection is a great way that you approached this situation. You paid attention to how you interacted last year, then you utilized strategies used in this summer's class to create a positive influence on your students. Although reflection is something thing that we just went over today in class, it's a tool that is extremely useful in this class as well as today's world. I know if my instructor wasn't energetic about the course he/she was teaching, I wouldn't be excited about going through the semester and learning more material. Again, a great way to implement positive strategies. Way to go Sherri.
