Feeling the Halo Effect

I was very intentional about how I introduced myself and my program to each of my classes. Instead of the "deer in headlights" introduction that I did last school year, this year I practiced being energetic, confident, and excited about the year to come. I really believe that it helped set a much more positive tone for my classes. Hopefully, this will cover me when I'm feeling overwhelmed and/or impatient.

  1. That was a very good one to implement, and I'm glad it worked! I changed my first day strategy as well after reflecting on what we learned about first impressions.

"Dear in headlights"--I know the feeling! That was my first day before NTI as well. It was much better this time.

  2. Correction--"DEER." I guess I have Saturday-itis.

  3. Loved your post - I have felt the same! The energy level is definitely mirrored back by the students.

  4. I think I set a "strict, but nice" tone, and I am kind of happy I did. The students know that although I am a new teacher, they wont get a chance to run over me. I am glad this worked for you.

  5. The first impression is always the one they remember. Glad you were firm.

  6. Sherri,
I think it's great that you projected an energetic attitude. That make the class more exciting to learn about. Reflection is a great way that you approached this situation. You paid attention to how you interacted last year, then you utilized strategies used in this summer's class to create a positive influence on your students. Although reflection is something thing that we just went over today in class, it's a tool that is extremely useful in this class as well as today's world. I know if my instructor wasn't energetic about the course he/she was teaching, I wouldn't be excited about going through the semester and learning more material. Again, a great way to implement positive strategies. Way to go Sherri.
