January 21st-28th-- What do I feel most proud of in my teaching this week? Why?
We had a student killed in a car crash last week. His funeral was today. I am most proud of being able to listen to the students that are struggling with this and talk to them. That is what teaching is all about. Being able to help kids through times of trouble.
Perry,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment that teaching is all about helping these kids "through times of trouble". Teaching is a whole lot more than just dumping data daily into their brains. Is showing them that we are willing to be there for them when life gets hard and listen to them.
Perry, we had 2 student deaths about 2 weeks apart earlier this year. Yes, the most important thing that you can do for them is to allow them to verbalize their feelings. And just listen to them. Life is not always a bed of roses. And as our students grow up they begin to see the real world through adult eyes. The innocence of youth slowly gives way to the realities of adulthood. Being an adult is just the pits sometimes!
ReplyDeletePerry, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of this student. How sad for his school family and for his parents and relatives. I'm sure your willingness to listen and talk about the tragedy with your students has meant a great deal to them. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteSometimes teachers need to shut their mouths and let the students do the teaching.
ReplyDeleteThrough tragedy students often bond together and learn much more valuable lessons then what a teacher could ever "tell" them.
Keep up the good work and guidance with your students.
