Kindness Week

This has been Kindness Week at my school. And, unfortunately, it has been anything but kind. Fights every day. Yesterday was a particulary bad day. Happened in the commons area near the vending machines at the end of B lunch. One guy threw another guy into the vending machines. The guy's head was bleeding, the other guy proceeded to continue hitting him. Over and over. Finally the SRO and the administrators broke it up. It was awful.

Then this morning, as the students were released from the commons area, before the 8:25 bell rang, another bad fight in the hallway. Ditto for lunch time. As the 3:30 bell rang, more altercations at the bus ramp.

I want my students to LOVE one another and be nice to one another. But it has not been happening at our school this week. Lots of gang activity going on. Too much violence.

I guess I am just a left-over hippie and all this violence is very upsetting to me. I wish every kid in the entire school could see the video Freedom Writers. And read the Freedom Writers Diary book too. Maybe they would see themselves and end this senseless violence!

  1. Hey Connie,
I truly believe that many of these kids don't have the home training we had years ago. I'm definately not against both spouses working but many people need to consider whats more important, the ability to gain more stuff by working more or the gains that society makes as a result of a lot of time spent with our kids teaching them how to be good positive contributors to that cause. Many parents aren't doing thier job in this area. We need to start a parent approved class in teaching kids this very thing. It should be made manditory for all years of high school. That's my thought!

  2. Dwayne, I agree with you. I sincerely believe it all goes back to the home. And, yes, unfortunately, many kids have not had any training at home. But something has got to be done or all these kids are going to be in prison in a few years. They simply do not know how to behave in society. It's sad really....
