Struggles of Past Week 9/15

"Of everything I did this past week in my teaching, what would I do differently if I had the chance to do it again? And, why"?
I have been unorganized this past week. I stress when everything is all over the place. I feel like I’ve taken on too much and cannot keep up. I am trying to make prioritized to-do lists. This week I’ve only added instead of checked-off. If I had the chance to do it again, I would have made more time after school to get things done. I’ve tried to protect my time off by not working late hours or at home this year. Instead of having my rest and at home time with my family, I’m grumpy and I stress about what I should have stayed and done or taken home. I struggle daily with a co-worker that isn’t much of a team player and takes advantage of those that are. I would have said “no” a lot more this past week.

  1. Hi Kim, your struggles this past week really hit home for me. This is my first year teaching, but I too struggle to do all that is required. Over the summer we made out a classroom management plan and I had a really good plan, but that's all it was. I haven't been able to leave work on time since I started. I try to get there early too, but it seems that someone is always waiting to strike up a conversation. I want so much to stick with my plan and have some days that I just go home and spend time with my family. I feel so unorganized and almost helpless at times. I am going to try to say "no"more too. I think that some of the experienced teachers don't realize that we have to learn a lot and that we have a lot on our plates. One thing that has helped me is taking my lunch no matter what. I hope next week is better for you.

  2. I have learned over the years to keep a list as well. Some weeks I am better than others on working my list. Other weeks I let other stuff get in the way. You are brand new and having to figure a lot of things out. Be patient with yourself. When I look at my list I do what NEEDS to be done; if I finish I go to what is NICE to be done. I cross out stuff that is NUTS to do. At some point I have to say what I have done is good enough and know that I've done what I can do and that I have done my best. You'll get there! Dr. J.
