2 Days out of School

What surprised you the most this week at school and why? What surprised me the most this week at school was the fact that I was out of school 2 days, a Thursday and a Friday and I got a report back that my 1st period student's behavior was great. I have 5 PEC kids in my 1st period, so the class can be a little difficult to "wrangle" at times. It's not the actual fact that their behavior was good those 2 days or that they usually misbehave. It was the fact that they perform a higher extremely high level. They completed 2 projects and 2 Vocabulary Contracts in my absence. They are fully capable of "doing school" but I know they can easily be distracted a lot of different circumstances. One main circumstance is the teacher being absent. The teacher across the hall brought them donuts because they performed so well. I was highly impressed.

  1. WOW!!!That is always good to come back to. It always makes you feel proud when a substitute reports good behavior. I had to be out this week due to jury duty. I always get a VERY strict substitute. She is familiar with my school and students. When I was preparing my plans, I told some of my students that I would not be there Monday and I expected their best behavior. They did not show up for class.

  2. I have done my fair share of substitute teaching and I like to think I was pretty good at it, but one thing I noticed is that the students behavior when they are with me is directly related to how the class is ran by the actual teacher. Sure, they may go to the restroom or listen to music more with a sub. But, the overall behavior and productivity of the students in your absence is from the expectations that have been set from day one. I had the opportunity to sub for a few of my past teachers and knew they ran a tight class. Every time I subbed in their classes, it was a pleasant experience. I believe their good behavior in your absence speaks greatly to a properly established set of expectations and class rules. It also reflects on how well you’re doing with your classes. You must have learned that from the NTI program!
