Please write about something that happened last week in your "teaching life" that made you happy and think to yourself, "this is what teaching is all about!"
Last week, my K5 students made me happy by learning how to use the mouse. In my class I request for my students to demonstrated what they learned to the class first before they are left alone on the computer. As each student would demonstrate, they would cheer for each other. With the cheers, it boost each other confidence. Their little smiles and cheers brighten my day.
It is always wonderful at any age when students cheer one another on. Often times, the students that I work with in particular are never told how great they are by anyone, so they come in with low levels of confidence. It is often hard for me to get students to share things with the class, even though they have shown that they have a solid understanding of the material. It lightens my heart to see my students begin to blossom once they begin to feel comfortable and their inner confidence begins to shine. I always say, I know its there, you just have to let the world see it.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand where you're coming from Akisa. To help a students enlighten their comfort zone is obtaining a goal in itself. These children come from various walks of life and they have a lot of things coming at them. This can be from lack of
ReplyDeleteTLC or just someone disiplining them. They honor and cherish that. We can reprimand them all day, but truely the nature of it is that they appreciate it and you are remembered for a lifetime. They come back to visit or perhaps speak to another class that is going through the same thing. We never stop teaching and the students never stop learning.
