Needing some advice

Having never dealt with this before in this context, I need some advice. I just got off the phone with a friend who told me that one of my students died this morning. I have called and confirmed this with others so I know it's true. As far as the "legalities" and "appropriateness", do I go to the funeral? What will the school likely do (if anything)? I have lost family, friends, and patients. This is a first as I have never lost a student. Monday will definately be a different day when we return from spring break.

This student died as a result of a long-term heart condition.

  1. Julie,
I am so sorry that you lost one of your students. I think it would be appropriate to go to the funeral. Some of our teachers recently went to a funeral of a student who was killed in a car crash from a school they taught at last year. It is a way to show concern and respect.

  2. Sorry to hear of the lost of one of your students. About two years ago I lost a student and last year I lost a former student. Not only should you try to attend the funeral but the school should also send flowers. This will help to build a good relationship between you and the family and also between the family abd the school because of you showing concern for a member of their family.

  3. Julie I am so sorry. I know that has got to be terrible to go through. I have not experienced it but I know I love my kids and I would have a hard time dealing with it. I would not hesitate to go to the funeral. I went to a funeral last year of one of my daughter's friends. There were teachers there from their school and tha place was full of students. I think you would be a great support to the family and the other students.

  4. I'm sorry you've lost one of your students. Do what's right for you as far as attending the funeral but I make it a point of attending funerals and weddings if at all possible.

  5. It's a terrible thing. My daughter has lost 3 of her friends. 1 in high school and the other 2 after. By all means you should follow your heart and don't worry about anything else.

  6. By all means - attend the funeral. Our students need to see that we care for them as individuals. You being at the funeral be a source of support for the family of the student you lost as well as the friends of that student.
