Some students surprised me with their choice of music
During lab activities, I generally allow my students to listen to music. In the design industry, listening to upbeat music is very common and enables the creative juice to flow freely. Today, some students were enjoying music dated back in the 80's. I was surprised to see how delighted they were listening to it as if the music was fresh and relevant today. Lots of creativity came out as a result. This observation allowed me to think of ways to engage this type of music in their set induction especially when referring to designs that were popular during a certain music age.
That's cool, Shirley! I would have been surprised too!! Listening to music seems like a great idea as well. In fact, I heard about a teacher who plays music for her students as a "brain break". When they have worked really hard, or if they are sluggish (like on a Monday morning), she will say "brain break" and play music for 1-2 minutes and allow the kids to dance and move around. When the music stops, it's time to work again! I can see how music causes creativity!!
ReplyDeleteHi Shirley, I see pros and cons to students listening to music. Last year, I allowed music while students were working on assignments. Then, it seemed to get out of hand, so I had to put a stop to it. This year as part of my professionalism and work ethic grades, I am not allowing electronics. It just seems to work better for me with the students I have. I can however see how it could be used as a reward in class. I think we just have to try to figure out what works and then go for it.

Hey Shirley,
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. I used to play music in my class as well. I used to put on some Miles Davis and John Coltrane because I just felt that students needed to listen to some real music. I always found jazz to be very soothing and relaxing. Some of my students gained an appreciation for the music as well. There have been times that I have allowed some of my kids to listen to their own music and honestly for some of the kids, it's almost like a pacifier!!! Even the loudest kids became silent as soon as they put their earphones in their ears. You may want to try the jazz with your kids, you never know who it might impact!
