HOSA
Last year, being a part-time teacher I really didn't get a chance to become active in various organizations after school. During our Healthcare PLC, we were discussing ways to get students more involved in HOSA. I was familiar with HOSA, but never looked into it because of my schedule. Needless to say, our school as a Chapter in place but the student participation is not so great. I learned that HOSA has a competition section for Sports Medicine. After discussing the competition with my students, I was able to get 15 of my Physical Medicine students to sign up for HOSA. We are looking forward to competing at State this year for the first time. I have learned that lack of knowledge can not only handicap me but also my students. If I would have put more of an effort into the HOSA chapter at school, we could have competed last year.
I have the same problem at my school. The other major factor is money, unfortunately the students would rather take $20 and buy junk food or a CD rather than participate in a school organization that has a lot to offer them. Membership at our school is a little less than %3 of the entire student body, so we know that there is work to be done.
ReplyDeleteI had that same problem last year as I entered half way through the school year. I had never heard of HOSA and stumbled about trying to get "it" going. This year I am in a different school with students from 3 different high schools. I had to start a new chapter and boy, what a job that was. I learned a lot about it along the way but have so much more to learn!!! I decided right away to get the students excited by incorporating it into a lesson plan, showing them a HOSA pep rally video and talking about my limited involvement as a Courtesy Clerk team at last spring's competition conference. I shared with them how much fun we had just being helpers. I still don't quite know all the "ins & outs" but will be going to our first leadership conference this coming week.
ReplyDeleteMoney is an issue for our kiddos here too but I was able to get 33 to sign on. I hope to see you there or at least in the spring!! Should be fun!
