Set Induction

Last week I showed a set induction that was played on CBS News ( 5p-6p) showing.  The topic of discussion was Genetically modified foods and it's affect on the local farmer, the economy and what the government's stance is on biotechnology and biotechnology companies.  This episode brought real world insight on things we have been discussing in class from the unit vocabulary to the economic impact biotechnology companies have on society.  My students were able to write down their thoughts on the video and relate it to previous class discussions.  I think this was the first time they realized that what they learn in class does have some relevance and an impact on their lives.

  1. Isn't it amazing how powerful it can be for a student to be able to link learning with real world application? It gives what you are teaching them merit. Don't we all want that assurance that what we are spending our time on now will be of significance to our future?

  2. Dr. Walker,
So often at the age they are, our students have so many disconnects. Much of what is taught is not relevant to them (in their minds). It is awesome to see things start to connect. I believe that once they start seeing the connections, it draws their overall interest in the class. At that point, some begin to look for ways other things may connect. (At least that is how I was and what I've seen on a few occasions.)
