At the first of the week I posted about the kid dipping in my class.Then when I sent him to see the A.P. he lied and told him that he wasn't. The A.P. suggested that we talk to him together,so we did yesterday.After about ten minutes of him denying that he was dipping and saying that he was tired of being accused by everyone,We got a confession,Some of the responses to my first post helped .I told him it bothered me more that he had lied to us about it than him actually dipping.
The A.P.said we needed to start tag teaming these things.It worked out great.My A.P. and I are trying to decide on some type of work detail instead of ISS .Because most kids like ISS. Thanks for all your responses.
Steve, I'm so glad things worked out well. I was hoping and praying the kid would tell the truth. Sounds like y'all had to squeeze it out of him but at least, in the end, he told the truth. This kid learned a valuable lesson about telling the truth and being responsible about his own actions, and the consequences of his own actions. I agree with you about ISS. For some kids it's a status symbol to say how many time you have been in ISS. Yes, I agree 100% that some other type of disciplinary action would be more beneficial for this kid than ISS. I'll be looking to see what you and the AP come up with.

ReplyDeleteI was in the same boat as you until I started telling the student that if they don't take ownership of the class one bad apple will ruin the whole bunch. So now if something goes wrong they will handle it between themselves, If they can before it gets to me. My will make you work in the lunchroom, pickup trash, or you could get Saturday school.Now that the AP knows bring him into your class and let him meet the demons I mean students
I saw one teacher do something that worked really well. If you catch them in the act and they hide it, simply make them open thier mouth, hold thier head straight back for 20 seconds, then hold it straight down for 20 seconds and see if it drips out. Do this without ever closing their mouth.
ReplyDeleteI think a work detail would be a great idea. We have our students do community service after school. They are assigned to a custodian and do any work the custodian assigns them to do.
